Police were involved in a shootout Saturday morning in Port Angeles. The man shot by police, identified as 36-year-old James Sweet, has been hospitalized in critical condition.
Officials with the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said no officers were injured by gunfire. A traffic stop was attempted and Sweet did not yield to officers, speeding off instead, according to the sheriff’s office.
After fleeing the traffic stop, Sweet was involved in a collision at U.S. 101 and Monroe Street. Sheriff’s officials said Sweet then pulled out a gun and opened fire on an officer.
The officer, identified as Whitney Fairbanks, returned fire.
Sweet is expected to survive.
