Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn is officially running for a second term.

“I am just so deeply honored to have served as your mayor for the past three years. I can’t even speak to what a privilege it’s been and I want to say to you, I’m hear to announce I’m running for re-election for mayor,” said McGinn.

The mayor announced his campaign at a Wednesday afternoon news conference. McGinn, a former Sierra Club leader, was first elected in 2009.

The mayor began the news conference addressing another news story of the day, the rumors circulating about reports that the Sacramento Kings are finalizing a deal to sell the team to the Seattle investment group led by Chris Hansen.

McGinn told those in attendance that he doesn’t know any more than the public.

“I know what you know,” said McGinn. “But if it’s true, ain’t it cool.”

McGinn said he would emphasize education, transportation and neighborhood safety in the upcoming campaign.

Several high-profile candidates have already announced they’ll challenge the incumbent, including state Sen. Ed Murray, City Councilman Tim Burgess and former City Councilman Peter Steinbrueck.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
