A baby girl named Lucy was born aboard a ferry en route to Seattle from Bainbridge Island Thursday afternoon, according to a Washington State Ferry spokesperson.
Crews aboard the Ferry Tacoma were notified that a woman was having contractions and would be boarding at 1:10pm.
Once aboard the vessel, she went into labor almost immediately.
“The captain, Ty Anderson, made an announcement asking if there was anybody on the vessel who had expertise,” said ferry spokesperson Marta Coursey.
An OB-GYN nurse and midwife, who happened to be heading to Seattle for work, delivered the baby girl during the 26 minute crossing. Crew members notified emergency personal, who were waiting at the dock upon her arrival.
Coursey said both mother and child are doing fine.
