The End of "Land for Peace"

The current conflict in Gaza should put an end, once and for all, to western pressure for "land for peace" negotiations in the Middle East. In 2005, the Israeli government withdrew all security forces, as well as forcibly removing 9,000 Jewish residents, to give Palestinians exclusive control of Gaza.

The world hoped that in ruling this enclave, Palestinians would make progress toward building their own viable, peaceful state. Instead, rocket attacks began immediately - with more than 8,000 strikes against Israeli civilians. Instead of encouraging cooperation, Israeli concessions encouraged more terror. The same sort of Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank would similarly lead to more violence, not less.

Before the conclusion of the new round of Gaza fighting, the international community must guarantee that Hamas killers will never again be allowed to launch unprovoked, random, deadly attacks against their neighbors.

    Medved's Omissions
Of course Medved neglects to mention Israel's SIEGE of the Gaza strip. Israel controls Gaza's: Airspace, Seacoast, all borders except for Egypt, Water, electricity, all commerce, Currency and Israel has: F-18's, Tanks, Helicopters, Bulldozers, a Navy AND Nuclear weapons. Palestinians have some hand rockets which have killed what....3 Israelis? Sticks and stones do not inflict the same damage as F-18's.

Michael, there are (at least) three truths you neglect to tell about 2005.
First, you must go much farther back in history to claim that Gaza was ever Israel's yo give. Even in the days of David, Gaza was of the lands of the Philistines. ... It only came to Israel as booty of the Six Day War.

Secondly, those 9000 settlers were on land taken from such residents there were 1967 and after. If those 9000 were forcibly removed, they were there illegally in the first place.

But, third, and this is virtually never noted, ALL, Israel left for Gaza WAS land. Perhaps a few gutted structured, but mostly ONLY land. .... As a gesture of good will in 2005, apartments and commercial buildings COULD have been left to be used by the people of Gaza, but - NO - virtually everything was dismantled and carried off. .. Even if worthless to the barest of salvage.

This meanness of spirit did not go unnoticed. Israel wonders why the hate?
