Everything about ‘Inherent Vice’ is depressing

I loathed this movie.
How did I even walk into this movie? The answer is, it has a great cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, and Benicio Del Toro.
The main character is Larry “Doc” Sportello (Phoenix) who is supposed to be a hippie private eye. The movie is based on the novel by Thomas Pynchon – and much like reading Pynchen’s work, which I’ve tried – watching the film, you don’t know where they’re going. By the end, you don’t where they’ve gone.
I left having wanted to throw something at the screen. It’s such a waste of talent.
In the drug-fueled story, everything turns out to be corrupt and everything about the movie is depressing.
But what might be most depressing is you never get those three hours back.
