The Toxic Mix of Rage and Worship

Muslim communities around the world erupted in violent, anti-American protests on September 14th, purportedly provoked by snippets of a crudely produced video mocking Mohammed. Experts widely predicted that day's turmoil because Friday is the Islamic day of public prayers, and riots often follow. Those equating Islam with Christianity and Judaism should try recalling the last time crowds surged out of synagogues or churches to storm embassies and battle authorities.

The unrest in the Middle East demonstrates the complete failure of President Obama's efforts to "re-set" Muslim-American relations, or to tamp down the fiery anger supposedly centered on George W. Bush. Appeasement, flattery and moral relativism don't work: in his 2009 Cairo speech the president said Islam and the West should "learn from each other," but what can America really learn from those who associate worship with violent rage?

    A few hundred or a few thousand demonstrators denouncing the USA is hardly a show of a "complete failure of President Obamas efforts to reset Muslim -American relations.

Granted, we've a long way to go still for understanding in the near east - let alone peace. But we will never achieve peace through arrogance.

    Medved asks "What can America really learn from those who associate worship with violent rage?" How about not supporting dictators like Mubarak for 40 years? How about not ethnically cleansing Palestine? How about not performing regime change in Iran in 1953? How about not invading Iraq in 2003? How about not occupying Lebanon like in 1983? How about holding Israel to the NPT? How about the US not backing Syrian rebels? How about American corporate/military behavior towards Middle east countries becoming beneficial towards the PEOPLE who live there? I think plenty of crowds surged out of churches after "Bloody Sunday" and during the problems of Northern Ireland. You just have to get to the root of the problem Michael.

    Michael - Gerry Adams and (ugh) Ian Paisley have found peace. So can Israel and Palestine. But it takes BOTH sides - without condescendtion.

    When they know damm well that it takes two to tango. Yes, the violent muslims are responsible for thier own actions. The piece that the right ignores is that sometimes that violence only happens because of some idiot who does the equivelant of lighting the rag on the bottle of gasoline. This time, a moron made a movie that intentionally was so inflamatory that it was that very match that lit this flame (and to complete the analogy - the gasoline is responsible for the explosion, but the match is responsible for setting off the gasoline...). It amazes me that not a single right wing person is willing to accept that.
