Last weekend was a false alarm thanks to wet weather, but drivers can expect delays on I-5 this weekend due to a paving project.
Southbound I-5 will be down to two lanes between 188th Street in Tukwila and 219th. The ramp from southbound I-405 to southbound I-5 will also be closed.
Closure details:
From 8 p.m. Friday, July 15 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 18, contractor crews plan to reduce southbound I-5 to two lanes between South 188th and South 219th streets to complete concrete panel replacement and crack and seat pavement work.
“That’s going to be a fairly substantial impact for folks,” said Washington State Department of Transportation spokesperson Travis Phelps.
Stuck in traffic? Find out why.
Phelps says there are about 87,000 cars that travel that stretch of I-5 every Saturday and Sunday. There could be more this weekend because of the two Mariners games against the Astros and the Bite of Seattle.
During the closure, crews will start some “very needed and critical paving repair work,” Phelps said. Though the work could be done at night, some stretches are so large that weekend work is required.
And the closure this weekend is just the beginning. At least some portion of SB I-5 in the area will be down to two lanes every weekend for the rest of July.
Phelps says to expect additional traffic on I-90, State Route 520, I-405, and State Route 167.
