KIRO Radio hosts dissect Hillary Clinton’s acceptance speech

Hillary Clinton made history Thursday night as she gave her acceptance speech. But didn’t stay confined to the moment. She spoke of her plans for the country, and went after her Republican rival Donald Trump.

KIRO Radio’s Jason Rantz and Dave Ross dissected the speech.

“She gave the speech that I expected her to give,” Dave said. “She didn’t try to be anybody else and didn’t go too deeply into details. But she made it clear that she actually has plans, and (Trump) does not.”

“I think what she is doing here is setting up the debates where she believes she will wipe the floor with him,” he said. “And to be fair to him, he has a challenge, too. Because if he goes after her, and looks too much like the man bullying the woman — that hurts him.”

Winning Bernie Sanders supporters

Dave Ross: If this doesn’t bring (Bernie supporters) on board, nothing will, because she adopted his platform. I can’t think of anything he campaigned for that she didn’t mention to tonight. From reforming campaign financing – she said she would appoint a Supreme Court justice who could overturn Citizens United which was what defined corporations as persons and put big money into politics.

And treaties that kill jobs. She said that any corporation that takes tax breaks and then starts firing people has to start refunding the taxpayers money. It sounds like she’s fully on board.

Jeers and cheers of Hillary Clinton

Rantz: Every single time you heard the “Hillary, Hillary” chant, it was meant to drown out the jeers coming from the audience. Throughout the night there were some jeers and boos. It wasn’t overwhelming. It was coming from small pockets throughout the audience … it was only a few people at a time. It was not very well choreographed if that was their intent. The response from the audience certainly seemed choreographed. Every single time that happened, they chanted “Hillary.” And Hillary Clinton didn’t seem phased.

Winning independent voters

Dave: (Hillary Clinton) says it’s not enough to have an idea, you have to know how to get it done … She’s going to hope that people understand the fact that a guy like Donald Trump gives a lot of promises. But if you look at his website, for most of (those promises), you don’t see any plans for achieving them. He just says, “trust me, I’ll do it.” She says, “Here’s how I’ll do it.” It’s not really a media-savvy argument. But I think she is hoping people, on reflection, say, “OK, that makes sense.”

Supreme Court

Rantz: Whenever you are talking about Supreme Court justice picks, that is the one thing that makes Conservatives nervous about Donald Trump, lean toward Trump. There’s not many Republicans who want Hillary Clinton to nominate up to three Supreme Court justices. Also, Hillary Clinton going after campaign finance when she is getting millions of dollars, it seems like it’s material for an attack ad.

Dave: Possibly, but I don’t think Donald Trump has much to argue on that point. He’s a billionaire. He’s self-financing his campaign. It’s a voice of one.

Guns and violence

Dave: They didn’t just talk about victims of police violence, they brought out people who lost police officers in the line of fire. And she also said we are not here to take your guns, we are here to keep you from being shot by a person who shouldn’t have one. I’ve never heard the argument put quite that way and aimed at gun owners. I don’t think she was just playing for the Bernie people, she was playing for Republicans.
