A political ad gets in trouble for being too accurate

There’s a new ad campaign to promote gay marriage in all states – and it includes spots that have people saying things like this:

“It’s time to allow marriage for all couples.”

“When couples are committed they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has.”

The second quote is from Laura Bush – who was on Larry King back in 2010 promoting her new book when King asked about areas where she disagrees with her husband. She mentioned that he and other conservatives had a lot of trouble with gay marriage.

“It’s a real reversal, really, for that to accept gay marriage,” Bush told King.

“But you do?” asked King.

“I think we could, yeah.” She goes on, “I think it’s generational thing.”

So she was pretty clear. But when the new ads came out, she asked that her quote be cut.

Which seemed unusual, because the clip wasn’t taken out of context, and there’s no indication she’s changed her views. But no problem – the Respect for Marriage Coalition pulled down the ad and in its place put up an ad featuring a 31-year-old former Marine named Craig Stowell, who is seen talking to the camera with his wife at his side.

“As Americans, we believe in freedom,” said Stowell. “That’s what I fought for as a Marine. That’s what we believe in as Republicans. I didn’t used to understand the importance of same sex marriage, but after learning my brother was gay, I wanted the same rights for him. He was the best man at my wedding. And I want to be the best man at his.”

Controversy resolved. As Mrs. Bush herself said in the original interview.

“I think it’s also a generational thing.”

Ross: Are we killing car culture? Or is car culture killing the US?

I don’t think the question is whether we're going to "kill" our car culture. The real question is can we stop our car culture from killing the U.S.?
