Known among Thierry and Tom for their delicious cabbage rolls and comfortable setting, Seattle’s Dinette boasts a chef who knows how to take simple ingredients and turn them into mouth watering dishes.

“The first thing I try is the toast bar or tartine.” Thierry Rautureau, of 97.3 KIRO FM’s Seattle Kitchen, describes a tartine as a slice of country bread, and it usually comes with something on top.

Katie O. says tartines at Dinette are so successful because the chef, Mel, uses a distinct layering of flavors.

“There’s usually some sort of protein, whether it’s the egg or the ham, and she’ll balance it out with something acid, sometimes it’s a salad.”

Tom believes Mel has talent in turning ordinary ingredients into something “luscious.”

“I think of Mel kind of like I think of Betty Crocker in her day because Mel takes the simplest dishes and when you eat them, you think ‘Hmmm’.”

Mel also uses less expensive ingredients to keep the menu items at a $20 or under price point.

Tom, Thierry, and Katie nominated Dinette as the best restaurant of the year and says the fact they all still make regular visits is a good sign.

Visit Dinette at 1514 East Olive Way in Seattle.
