One question everyone brings up how many runs he saved. I bring up how many runs did he leave stranded in scoring position. I bet it is twice or three times as many as he saved. Now that being said two or three times might be par for the course for every player i dont know. Just hit the dang ball.

On the other hand, with Ryan, maybe some of the managers are seeing what I see, and don't like it anymore than I do. Flying out toward the left field line on a blooper both the 3B and LF are calling for when there's a runner on second and he ought to be covering third instead. Or peeling off at the last minute on easy pops to the outfield when the OFer has them coming in and has been calling for all the way. Stuff the TV cameras rarely catch, stuff you usually can only appreciate by being at the game in person. Not only do you risk injuring yourself or your teammates, but you take yourself out of position to make the potential next play on the infield for no good reason. That kind of play makes OF's (and wise managers and coaches) very nervous. I call it the Yuniskey Betancourt Syndrome. My high school coach called it being a ball hog.

Screaming the whole time is actually part of the problem. When an outfielder is camped under a ball, or has it coming in calling for it all the way, having an infielder yelling at the top of his lungs from the get-go makes the outfielder wonder if the infielder even hears him. He certainly can't see the outfielder while running out looking over his shoulder toward home. This means the outfielder has to take some attention from the ball to keep one eye out for the infielder. Obviously, you take off hard at the crack of the bat on every ball, regardless of your position. But as an infielder going out, you have to listen for the outfielder first to decide if you're going to continue or peel off. And if the outfielder is calling for it, you peel off immediately, not two steps in front of him, as Ryan is prone to do. The man coming in always takes priority if he's calling for it. ALWAYS. Do not confuse grandstanding with hustle, especially if it takes you out of position on a potentially extended play.

All that aside, I was merely suggesting two of many possible reasons why managers and coaches who get to see 162 games a year from the best seat in the ballpark, and who presumably understand the nuances of the game a teeny bit better than we internet experts, might prefer Hardy to Ryan, regardless of the "advanced" metrics.
