Bad Move

I’d like to support the position of Eric Wedge as expressed on the Hot Stove interview tonight. The Mariners’ best chance of having a better record in 2013 comes from their core players continuing to improve -- giving us more of the good stuff we saw in 2012 and less of the bad stuff. The Mariners players need to gel as a team and have a chance to create the kind of magic that doesn’t pay heed to past stats of any particular player. We saw glimpses of that last season and it was pretty exciting. Lots of teams try to buy their way to a World Series title. Once in a while that works, mostly it doesn’t. That’s because a clubhouse full of highly paid egos is not a baseball team. I think courting Josh Hamilton is a mistake. He’s a talented athlete but a troubled person and can only interfere with the Mariners’ attempt to create a real team of guys who believe in and support each other. Sticking with their core players and keeping an eye on the amazing talent coming up soon might not mean a trip to the playoffs for the Mariners this year, but we’re going to see lots of great baseball in 2013 and beyond and be able to feel like part of something with a real foundation, not a patched together equipment bag of whatever bits can be scrounged from the free agent pile in any given year. (I am happy to see Jason Bay on board, though. But that could be my Canadian bias.) I think impatience has been our undoing in the past decade. We’ve got a solid core and should keep most of it and support it and not screw it up with a prima-donna purchase.

We heard reports that the Mariners name was attached to every rumor associated with available hitters. Worked out nicely, everyone got excited about possible corner outfield options, and once again it appears that we are the runt at the bowl. Oh we'll be alright, Guti looks good now that he's healthy, he could barely hit when he was healthy. And once again, taking the field is Ryan and his .200 average. If the Cardinals, who had enough hitters to cover for him, didn't want him, why is he good enough for us. Come on' man! How 'bout a package to the Rockies for Tulo and Cargo, ie Hultzen, Pryor, Saunders, Beaven, Carp. Too bad Choo is gone, would've completed a playoff caliber team. Let's get something done, we're begging for good ball!
