Today was the day that arbitration figures needed to be exchanged if agreement was not reached with arbitration-eligible players. The Mariners had three such players and agreements were reached with two of them, Kendrys Morales and Brendan Ryan.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that Ryan received $3.25 million and that the Morales deal is worth $5.25 million plus performance bonuses. Morales earned $2.975 million last year. Jason Vargas, whom the Mariners traded for Morales, avoided arbitration signing a one-year $8.5 million dollar deal with the Angels.

Shawn Kelley remains the only unsigned arbitration-eligible player for the Mariners. Figures between the two sides have been exchanged and they can negotiate right up until the arbitration hearing next month.

Vargas got about a million more than I would have thought; Ryan also got more. Morales not so much in relation to his value although this is most likely due to his non-productive injury related lost time. Personally I expect good things from Morales now he's fully recovered and if Smoak doesn't pan out I hope they resign him, unless I'm wrong - which actually happened once.

As much as I like Mr. Ryan's glove I find it surprising he would get such a raise for hitting .197. Only in pro sports I guess.

They acquired a guy they gave up for Ryan Langerhan who has yet to stick in majors like Mike Morse.. Give up are best hitter for him, really much rather gave up Brendan ryan to Oaklan atleast Seattle would have came ahead on the trade.. Seattle Mariners are you that stupid signing a guy like brendan Ryan to 1yr 2.35 million for guy who can't hit at all much less provide you any offensive support in lineup.. Would just be easier to go with Carlos Triunfel & Nick Franklin atleast it would be better game to watch..

Please explain to me how John Jaso was a better hitter last season than Seager or Saunders, and then explain how John Jaso will be more valuable to us this season as a platoon DH/Catcher than Mike Morse will be as an everyday DH/1B/Outfield?

Higher OBP, higher SLG, higher walk rate, lower k rate, shall I keep going? You're also forgetting that there's far more RHP's than lefties. Even if he were platooned, he'd still see a ton of PA's. And there's still evidence in his splits, such as his K rate, walk rate, contact, etc, which were all nearly identical, that he can hit lefties if given more of a chance. Another thing you're not considering, is Morse's health record. Despite being benched at the beginning of the season, Jaso still played in more games than Morse. I like Morse, but you can't ignore his injury history.

We now need a catcher. Morse is a terrible outfielder and we already had plenty of 1B/DH options (Jaso would have been one of them!). Jaso's of more value all the way around. And that's not shot at Morse, I like him, but this was a foolish trade. But as far as Ryan goes... I don't think most people understand just how valuable his defense was (is). He's worth the cost. And it's not like he can hit any worse! He really has no where to go but up. His career line suggests he's very capable.

which not only gave him their SS award but also said he was the best defensive player in all of MLB. A run saved is as good as a run scored and he's saved a lot.

A run saved in a close game is worth a lot. A run saved in a blowout means nothing. I would like to see someone come up with more situational stats for runs saved. In football, a game winning fourth quarter touchdown means more than a fourth quarter touchdown that changes the score from 42-0 to 42-7. I do not deny that Ryan is better than average defensively, but he is the kind of player that most good teams have as a late inning defensive replacement.

You're right, with his glove on a good hitting team he would be a defensive replacement, or even play the whole game and bat ninth and nobody would care.
As far as runs saved go, rather than trying to place value on individual runs, roughly nine saved runs on defense equal one dWAR. In essence, it averages out the games where a run or two (in either a win or a loss) don't change the outcome, versus the close games.

Everyone needs to pipe down about his lack of offense. Ryans offensive numbers last season were not the norm in comparison to his career numbers, so it is highly likely we can expect an increase in his offensive production. Consider also that his OBP last season was nearly equal to 2 seasons ago, and yet he hit almost 50 points less. Say what you want about the guy but he knows how to draw a walk. Jaso's numbers last season were actually slightly inflated in comparison to his career norms, so some regression is likely. Everyone complains about the Morse for Jaso trade because Jaso is our "best hitter", but take into account that Jaso will probably regress and is already a platoon player.

Ryan's offensive numbers have been trending downward the entire six years since he broke in. They have gotten especially bad since he moved to the AL. He can draw a walk (although why any pitcher would walk him is beside me), but he isn't a walking machine. Even Smoak, who currently scares no one, got more last year. Unfortunately, he has one offensive stat that is going up every year - strike outs. He struck out once every 4.8 PA's last year, which could be overlooked if he were crushing the ball the rest of the time. Only guys like Figgins and Olivo struck out more often. If he bats .225 with an OPS of .610 next year, I'll be surprised.
