Mariners and Jack Zduriencik moving forward

Zduriencik joins the "Kevin Calabro Show" after the announcement that he had agreed to a multi-year contract extension with the Mariners.

Update: The Mariners have announced a multi-year contract extension with GM Jack Zduriencik.

"Jack arrived in Seattle with a clear plan, and he has not deviated from that plan," Mariners president Chuck Armstrong said in a team release. "Jack wanted to increase the talent base in our organization through scouting and player development. That is exactly what he has done."

Mike Salk is reporting that a team source tells him general manager Jack Zduriencik will be returning to the Mariners for at least one more year and that an announcement could come within the week.

Zduriencik has declined to comment on his contract status this season but as I have reported since July, the relationship between Zduriencik and the team has been good and the expectation within the organization has been that an extension or new contract would get done either at the end of the season or shortly before.

Zduriencik was working under a three-year contract which was a departure from the "evergreen" contract that previous GM Bill Bavasi had. Whether or not the new deal is a multi-year deal or renewable contract has yet to be learned.

Zduriencik inherited a team that lost 101 games in 2008, and since then the Mariners have gone 203-255 in his three seasons as general manager. Notable draft picks Dustin Ackley and Kyle Seager reached the major leagues relatively quickly, and more recent draft picks like James Paxton and Danny Hultzen aren't expected to take long either.

You actually don't know what you are talking about. This is the first year in over a decade that the M's have had any decent prospects playing for them. After their run in the early 2000's they kept trying to be good by signing over priced, underperforming veterans. I would much rather watch a bunch of talented and hungary prospects who will develop the nucleous of a great team.

I can't take another year of rebuilding. There's enough pieces in the farm to trade for a good LF or 3b without decimating it, and there should be the money to buy a decent DH. No more bargain basement shopping and wait-til-next year. They have the young core in the starting staff and in most of the lineup to get it done next year. We were told it'd be until 2012 to return to contention when Z came in... well, guess what...? :)

Wow...we really want to trade for a LF or a 3RD basemen. There is a very good chance that those pieces are being filled as the season winds down. How about finding a taker for Ichiro who somehow seems disconnected from all these young guys who are going out there and making it exciting for the first time in several years. M's are right on track. Solidify the bench and make sure Guti is the guy for 2012 in CF. But Seager, Ackley, Carp, Smoak, Wells, Robinson....hey that's a solid start on the future.

No more general managers that have to win now and who trade away the future for a bunch of old steroid users. Keep Jack and we will have a solid team for years to come. Jack's only misfire was Figgins.

...but I totally understand someone making the opposite argument. I think the damage done by constantly churning GM's and managers warrants giving this guy a sustained shot. Bavasi dug enough of a hole that I think Jack gets a little extra time to sort it out. If things still look grim at this time next year then it's time to look elsewhere. Go Jack! (but it's going to take tangible results next year in the win column or I'm jumping ship...).

Why not bring him back, he is a direct reflection of the M's Ownership group that pay's Ichiro big yen and will at least break even when serious teams like The NYY,Bo-sox,Texas,Atlanta,Cubs,LAA,San Francisco Giants and others send the M's their profit sharing checks to reward their inept and dis-functional teams in a world-class tax payer funded stadium. Someone needs to send Jack a copoy of the book, MLB GM's book for idiots.

Jack was able to bring us Cliff Lee from out of nowhere. I have faith he could find a better candidate for getting a real middle of the order bat in here than I could by rosterbating a name from another team off the top of my head. The point is, for all the success the youngsters have had so far, they still haven't had a full season, haven't had their sophomore slumps, haven't had to go through having the league get the book on them and adjust to them. The rebuild of the farm is great, the quality of players coming in is going up, but this team has to continue to improve. No more blue light specials and cheaping out in the offseason. Make a signature trade for a premier player or two, or a big splash in free agency if the right fellow is there (which admittedly might not be this offseason). But 2012 can't continue to be rebuilding, or else every night's attendance will be about the size of King's Court...

1st Base / DH would be the spot that would make the most sense. It's a pipe dream, but if we could sign Prince Fielder he would be a great fit for Safeco and he is young. We could move Smoak to DH and could spell Fielder at 1st on off days. RF and CF are also areas that we can improve on. We have a ton of young outfielders that are basically platooning LF. I am not sold on Gutierrez's bat and Ichiro looks to be done. Unfortunately with our ownership group being who they are, moving Ichiro is not going to happen. Perhaps a trade that Seattle can make would be for Matt Kemp, CF for the Dodgers. The Dodgers seem to be a mess right now, perhaps we can put a package together for him?
