I have always believed that the Mariners money came from their Majority owner Hiroshi Yamauchi(Nintendo)and that Armstrong & Lincoln made the decision for him because he is a "silent" owner. This thought was backed up by Wikipedia, "Majority owner Hiroshi Yamauchi, is represented by Howard Lincoln and president Chuck Armstrong." BUT I read an article By Seattle Times staff reporter Geoff Baker(01/07/11) titled Key owner's fortunes sink along with M's(http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/mariners/2016430165_larson07.html) This article points to minority owner Chris Larson and doesn't paint a pretty financial picture of Mr. Larson and the Mariners.

Here's a thought, Would Signing a trio of players (at the same cost) like Jason Kubel, Michael Cuddyer & Aramis Ramirez be a better idea then one Big bopper long term? Don't get me wrong I think Fielder would be a good fit in Seattle but I also think that he needs a hitter in front and behind him or he'll be pitched around.
