Ichiro hitting leadoff
We all suspected the move could be made today and it has been. Ichiro has been moved out of the three spot and will be hitting leadoff. The order is as follows:
Ichiro 9
Ackley 4
Seager 5
Montero DH
Smoak 3
Carp 7
Olivo 2
Saunders 8
Ryan 6
Ichiro moves back to the position he is most familiar with. While he has not profiled well hitting third because his power numbers and RISP have not been good, he does still lead the team in hits and he still can do some things on the bases. While Eric Wedge likes Dustin Ackley at leadoff, this move perhaps causes the least disruption and gives Ichiro an opportunity for success in a spot he is better suited for.
Wedge is still stuck with three lefties at the top of the order, which is problematic especially late in games. I suspect we will see a different lineup against lefties, although his options are limited.
Something I have been very intrigued to see is Kyle Seager hitting behind Ackley. Kyle told me weeks ago that he always followed Ackley no matter where he was in the batting order at North Carolina and is very comfortable there.
I will have more on the moves when we have an opportunity to talk to Wedge in a couple of hours. We should also hear from the newest Mariner, Stephen Pryor, on the pregame show.
