Off air, Dave Ross is known for his roles in local productions of Gilbert and Sullivan favorites. But it’s not those acting chops that gave Dave his first opportunity to vote for the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Dave was able to cast a vote for the cast of “Lincoln” because last winter the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, of which Dave is a member, merged with the Screen Actors Guild.

At Sunday night’s award show, they boasted “one union.” And then, the favorite, “Lincoln,” was taken out by “Argo.”

Even though he didn’t vote for “Argo,” Dave has a theory that journalists like him want to see movies about the news. “‘Argo’ is about a current events story, and now you’ve got these thousands of news people able to vote for the first time for the Screen Actor’s Guild awards. And we’re just beside ourselves with this type of power.”

Tom doesn’t think there is as much to that theory. “The journalists have been going hog wild about ‘Lincoln’ too.”

All of the guilds (Producer’s Director’s Actor’s, etc.) have the opportunity to vote for the Academy Awards, and even before the merger, SAG was one of the largest voting blocks. If they’re picking favorites with “Argo,” once favorited-“Lincoln” may be falling by the wayside.

But Tom says “Argo” might not just have the numbers in it’s favor. The Producer’s Guild, one of the smallest and most elite groups picked “Argo” for best film as well.

In case you haven’t – Tom says both “Argo” and “Lincoln” are worth seeing.

Ross: Are we killing car culture? Or is car culture killing the US?

I don’t think the question is whether we're going to "kill" our car culture. The real question is can we stop our car culture from killing the U.S.?

Every move you make, every swerve you take, every lane change you fake – someone’s watching you. Do drivers have a right to keep driving data private?
