KTTH’s Michael Medved, a movie critic for more than 36 years, says Angelina Jolie Pitt reportedly filing for divorce from Brad Pitt goes beyond the typical meaningless Hollywood gossip.

It’s just sad because they both are unusually intelligent for actors. One of the things you know when covering the movie business, or working in the movie business, is most actors, to put it charitably, are not intellectual titans. But both Angelina and Brad are serious people, creative people, and smart. They both have been committed to good works. I know Brad Pitt was very prominent in helping people after Hurricane Katrina and has been deeply involved with charities. His wife, of course, has been a UN ambassador and helps refugees and abused women.

They have this brood of children, some of whom are biological others who are adopted from various parts of the world. Divorce is sad whenever it happens, but when it happens to people who appear to have so many advantages, I think the message it sends to everyone else is that maintaining a marriage is just impossible. It’s sad. I think there is a lot of people who will sort of snicker because there is a great resentment for people who are that good-looking and that rich. But, if there was a long-term Hollywood couple that I would have thought had a chance to, as they say, go the distance, they would have been it. It’s too bad.
