Travel deals in early spring

Would you believe it if I said early spring is a magical time to travel? I'm talking about travel deals, and there are plenty of them this time of year.

Once spring breakers go home for the season, destinations start rolling out the incentives - like ski resorts. Ski season in Vermont, Colorado and Utah, among others, tends to end in mid-April, or after Easter weekend. But that doesn't mean everything closes. It means that lodging drops significantly, and you can have the mountain to yourself.

Prefer to travel by sea? Cruises go on sale in spring as well. There are repositioning cruises, when the ships are being moved to their summer homes.

You can also find rock-bottom prices on a typical Caribbean cruise in late March and early April. Of course, the million dollar question is: Will airfare go down this spring? Fuel prices are going up and airlines have already hiked fares.

But we've already seen some limited-time and one-day sales for spring travel, so stay vigilant and flexible. And pay attention to the dreaded asterisk so you don't get hit with any surprises by the time you check out.
