Maybe Canadians want to move to the U.S. for some excitement

Every time there’s a sufficiently divisive election, a certain number of high-profile people will announce they are leaving America if they don’t like the result.

Of course, these people usually have plenty of money, or they have the kind of occupation that’s easily transferable. I actually had a friend who moved to New Zealand after George Bush was elected. He was a urologist and had no problem moving.

But what about ordinary American refugees? They’ll just have to marry a Canadian. And now there is an app to help them.

“There’s just a border separating us and I thought it was about time that Americans and Canadians had the opportunity to date,” Joe Goldman said.

Goldman is the founder of Maple Match, a dating app to match Americans with Canadians. It has a deal-breaker feature so you can be up front about things such as smoking, or the kind of political views you will not tolerate.

“So that way, ultimately, you don’t have to go through the second or third or fourth date and then have to ask those questions and ultimately find out they wasted your time,” he said.

The app was not specifically designed for Trump refugees, but he couldn’t ignore the increase in traffic after the election.

“We received the most amount of traffic that Maple Match has ever received,” he said.

Maple Match shot to the top of the rankings in the Canadian App store. And what is it that makes Canadians so attractive?

“We have about a two-to-one ratio of Americans to Canadians, but if you think about it there are only about 30-35 million Canadians, about 300 million Americans,” Goldman said. “So, proportionally speaking, Canadians are very excited about Maple Match and meeting Americans.”

That’s when it hit me – who’s to say this app is about Americans wanting to move to Canada to escape Trump? It could just as well be about Canadians wanting to move to America so they can finally live in a country with some excitement.

Ross: Are we killing car culture? Or is car culture killing the US?

I don’t think the question is whether we're going to "kill" our car culture. The real question is can we stop our car culture from killing the U.S.?
