The state is catching up with drivers who cross the Highway 520 bridge without a Good to Go account.

In October, the state Department of Transportation admitted that bills for more than 350,000 tolls weren’t processed on time.

Toll division director Craig Stone says they’ve chopped that backlog down to only about 25,000 notices that will be sent out for crossings between December of last year, when tolling started on 520, and June 30th.

The state was late in sending out “pay by mail” bills because the system had a hard time reading out of state plates, especially from California.

Cars licensed in California were missed because a toll subcontractor hadn’t filed the paperwork on time to establish access to a database there. That glitch has been fixed.

Today is the one year anniversary of tolling on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Stone says a majority, about 98 percent, of drivers crossing that bridge have a Good to Go account to have the tolls electronically deducted.
