Must See Show: River Giant w/Bellamaine, Comettes

Singer Kyle Jacobson, bassist Trent Schreiner, and drummer Liam O’Conner are the three men who make up county/rock band River Giant. Their self-titled debut LP was released last April and I really wish I would’ve discovered the album back then; that way, I would have known which record to turn to when I was yearning for a raucous yet relaxing reprieve from the monotony of life. That last sentence may sound like a bloated, over the top compliment but then again, you probably haven’t listened to the record yet. It’s ok, you’ll share my opinion once you decide to get hip.

The album starts out with the heart string tugging, country tinged ‘Out Here, Outside’ and then rolls right into ‘Pink Flamingos’, a song that either sounds like a track Spoon could’ve cut or a mid-seventies rock staple but I can’t quite make up my mind. The song is damn good however you slice it. Not only has ‘I Permute This Marriage’ given my vocabulary a workout but the song makes me want to get married, question said marriage and then permute the darn thing. Throughout ‘I Permute This Marriage’, (one of my favorites on the record) Kyle sings with an emotion found only within recently broken hearts and the tears of babies.

River Giant’s record is one that deserves attention. From beginning to end, it’s a long and winding road decorated with broken feelings and hopeful longing, loaded with sexy harmonies and bad ass rock n’ roll.

Listen to a chat I had with the guys here.

River Giant plays The Chop Suey Saturday, March 23rd.

NEW MUSIC: Charlie and The Rays release debut album

Charlie and the Rays' debut album is a sprawling pastiche of roots rock and pop. The self-titled album is a gem awash with vocal harmonies, hand claps, wailing guitar licks, and deep swells of emotion.
