The state is studying how it can mitigate traffic problems at the Highway 2 interchange in Lake Stevens. (WSDOT)

The Washington State Department of Transportation estimates an additional 200,000 people will move into Snohomish County by 2035. If you’ve ever tried to get to Lake Stevens, you’ve likely noticed the congestion at the Highway 2 interchange is already unbearable at times.

The Washington State Department of Transportation is studying the Highway 2/SR 204/20th Street SE Interchange and asking the public for help in identifying existing issues and future improvements at the troubled infrastructure.

In December 2016, WSDOT formed a study support team with representatives from Snohomish County, Community Transit, and the cities of Lake Stevens, Everett, Monroe, and Marysville in an effort to figure out how they could fix the corridor.

KIRO drivers often complain about the Highway 2 trestle itself not having enough capacity for the number of vehicles crossing it or the added congestion on Highway 9. Either way, if you don’t hit those routes at the right time, you get stuck in a backup. Specifically, in the afternoon, drivers see increasing congestion on Highway 2, which leads to backups on northbound I-5.

Along with the support team, the Washington State Department of Transportation is conducting a public survey about the US 2 interchange.

The survey can be found here.
