Rantz: Snohomish wasting time, dollars on silly vote

The Snohomish City Council must have money to burn. They’re deciding to waste dollars – along with time and energy – on a meaningless advisory measure for a topic that’s already been decided: allowing for pot shops.

The vote already took place. On I-502, which legalized marijuana in the state, Snohomish County voted in favor with 54.59 percent. In the City of Snohomish? Fifty-five percent voted in favor. I have to assume that people who support legalized weed are smart enough to realize that there would be some likelihood that a pot shop would go up in their county and city.
Yet the council is still prohibiting the sale, production and processing of marijuana within city limits.
But now, the council wants residents to vote and give them their opinion. The advisory measure would be on the August ballot but the results are not enforceable. What makes you think the council – already ignoring the results of I-502 – will react any differently?
This seems to me like a council that will keep asking for feedback on the issue and only accept the feedback when it’s what they want to hear. Save everyone time and money: Do what the voters in your county already asked for.
