Oak Harbor councilman tries to take away a vet's weapon

An Oak Harbor City Council Member is accused of overstepping his authority when he asked a man with a concealed weapons permit to surrender his gun saying it was "not needed" at the public meeting.

Lucas Yonkman went to the meeting to listen to a discussion about the city's gun ban in public parks. He ended up testifying, urging people to support the 2nd amendment.

Watch what happened above. The councilman's concern about the veteran's concealed weapon begins about two minutes into the video.

A portion of the Oak Harbor City Council meeting from January 15 was posted online. It's had more than 82,000 views.

    Was this staged or what

At about 2:05 when the gentleman finished his speech and sat down, he sat down with a bunch of people seated with him, by the end of the mayor's speech and referred to the good gentlemen Mr. Yonkman at 6:00 minutes in the video, there were only 5 people left and 7 chairs? Did everybody leave when he indicated that he had a weapon?

Did they leave when the Mayor went on his rant? This was pretty good quality video and sound, I didn't hear chairs being moved or people leaving that you would normally hear in a small meeting with people so close to the council?

There are a lot of question about this video because it appears that they were to talk about parks and other things but the council let the fact that this guy carrying a firearm turn the meeting into a 2nd amendment meeting? I am calling BS

    Not staged
The author of the video posted in the youtube comments that the raw video is available on the city's website. He edited out about two hours of ordinary/uneventful city business; the Mayor didn't make his comments until after that.

    I Reserve the Right
Someone walks in with a gun. You: A) Say, "Good for you." B) Take your family and leave before the shooting starts. C) Protect your family by shooting first. I reserve the right to leave if someone walks in with a gun.

It's pretty common for a democrat to abuse authority they don't have

    Mayor for the next Governor
Finally a representative that vows to uphold the constitution. Whether or not he or others in room agree with the 2nd Amendment, they stood fast and respected the constitution and the rights of one of our countries veterans. The fundamental principles of the constitution are what has made this country what it is today.

is that this actually happened on January 15...and it doesn't hit the liberal Seattle media until it gets spread all over the internet.

    Unfortunately,
guns make a lot of people around here uncomfortable. I recently saw a guy who was carrying his pistol in a holster on his hip and someone called the police. He was forced to endure about an hour of "questioning" by law enforcement because he chose to "open carry". What happened to Mr. Yonkman and the individual I saw is likely not what was intended by the second amendment. It's basically harassment because of the law abiding choices that they made. Was it necessary -- who knows? Was it legal -- absolutely!

    guess that makes me a-typical...
cause i support the vet and condemn the actions of the council member who acted in such a way.

dudes like that vet are EXACTLY the guys that SHOULD have the CC permit and that you'd WANT to be carrying when something went down.

    Scared of a veteran?
This guy is scared of a veteran who was wounded in combat in the service of our country!? This guy has seen combat and probably has more firearms experience than half the police force. I would feel safer with him around.
