Oak Harbor councilman tries to take away a vet's weapon

An Oak Harbor City Council Member is accused of overstepping his authority when he asked a man with a concealed weapons permit to surrender his gun saying it was "not needed" at the public meeting.

Lucas Yonkman went to the meeting to listen to a discussion about the city's gun ban in public parks. He ended up testifying, urging people to support the 2nd amendment.

Watch what happened above. The councilman's concern about the veteran's concealed weapon begins about two minutes into the video.

A portion of the Oak Harbor City Council meeting from January 15 was posted online. It's had more than 82,000 views.

    Dont keed a Fire extingusher?
I have been a firefighter for 30 years. Many a devastating fire has been stopped in in beginning phase with a Fire extinguisher.

Even a garden hose has made my job far easier and saved the homeowner thousands of dollars insurance hassles and saved lives.

Most are missing a big point..
This councilmen attempted to pass a movement to not allow firearms at the meeting, which is protected by the 2nd Amendment and reinforced and verified by the city attorney. Upon being voted down, the man left the procedure. This councilman refused to observe an individual's rights AND refused to observe the rules of the city meeting, in effect not doing the job he was elected to do. He refused to represent the public in a legal proceeding that was being lawfully attended by a concealed weapons carrier. You could change the term "Concealed weapons carrier" with "women", "black man" or "homosexual", and its the same thing. Discrimination. He was in no more danger with anyone or any other member of any group attending as he was with that CCW licensed person attending, and the 2nd Amendment recognizes that. The councilman should be removed.

    As I have said before

Every American should be able to carry, we all should be able to go to work with a firearm, all of our teachers should have one, especially in high school, Fred Meyers employee's, Mcdonalds, 7-11 ect, if they are protected by the 2nd amendment to carry.

The council member has every right to be uncomfortable with someone he doesn't know spouting off about having a lethal weapon in his possession, I would be uncomfortable as well.

Here's the problem I have with this guy, If he would have went to the council meeting, said his say WITHOUT announcing that he was carrying a concealed weapon, this would have never made news. If you carry a weapon for protection, what is the purpose of walking around announcing that you have a weapon on you?

I guarantee you that if a 21 year old kid came in there with his pants hanging off his a55 and hat to the side, that motion would have passed, lol.

Look at me, I am carrying, I am a proud American, lol, if this is the case, people should be able to carry anywhere, at work, store, schools, colleges, hospitals, I mean any public and/or private entity because it is there protected right as an American.

    He didn't "announce" anything
He just answered a question honestly. The councilman brought the subject up by asking the question. If a droopy drawered 21 year old had a conceal permit, it would not have been illegal for him to be carrying in there, so chances are that the motion would not have passed.

    Ignorance of State Laws?
It seems to me that Oak Harbor City Councilman Rick Almber really should educate himself on the laws of the state, not to mention of the locality he is supposed to represent. Washington is an open carry state, you don't need a permit to carry a gun if it isn't concealed, only if it is concealed. I hope his opponent uses this ignorance against him in any upcoming election. If he is ignorant of this law, what others is he just as ignorant?

    Council conduct
I support concealed carry... Even with the controversy over the councilman asking if the man was armed and trying to pass a motion to remove him..the conduct of the council was highly professional compared to what I have witnessed in two north Texas cities for the past year.
