Prepare for hurricane-force winds in Western Washington

While a picture is supposed to be worth a thousand words, one word from the National Weather Service in Seattle conjures up a thousand disastrous images - hurricane.

The NWS says the strongest storm in memory for September is headed toward Western Washington.

Hurricane-force winds are expected in the northern part of Western Washington Sunday night and into Monday morning.

Most of the area, except for Tacoma and southwest interior area, will see high winds of 30 to 55 mph with gusts of 50 to 60 mph.

Areas along the northern coast and around the Admiralty Inlet, southern San Juans, and northern Whidbey Island could see hurricane force gusts of 70 to 75 mph.

Expect damage to trees and structures, power outages, and for unsecured items like lawn furniture and garbage cans to be blown around.

Power outages are also likely. Watch KING 5 Seattle for weather updates through the evening, and listen to KIRO Radio 97.3 FM for complete coverage 5-9am Monday.
