Weak gun laws blamed for Seattle violence

"The gun violence problem is in Seattle. The solution is in Olympia," declares Ralph Fascitelli, president of Washington Ceasefire. "We have a lot of angry people who can easily get guns."

Seattle residents are trying to make sense of gun violence that has claimed five lives, in different neighborhoods, since last Thursday. Several others have been wounded in shootings.

Police have said guns, not gangs, are responsible for the crimes. Fascitelli blames Washington gun laws which he says are "terrible, the worst in the country."

GunshowPeople who buy guns through licensed dealers in Washington have to go through background checks and a five-day waiting period. The dealer is also required to keep complete records on gun sales. He says that doesn't happen at most gun shows every weekend in this state and around the country.

"People can buy an unlimited number of guns. They're not traceable, and it creates a secondary market for illegal gun sales," Fascitelli says.

Brady Foundation, a national group trying to prevent gun violence, estimates over forty percent of gun acquisitions occur in the secondary market.

Washington has weak gun laws that help feed the illegal gun market, allow the sale of guns without background checks and allow the sale of military-style assault weapons, according to the Brady Campaign.

They call that the "gun show loophole" which has been closed by legislation in Oregon and California, but not here.

"There isn't a kid in high school who couldn't get a gun in five minutes if he really wanted one," says Fascitelli.

"I have a hard time believing that," says Dave Workman, senior editor for TheGunMag.com. "It's a myth that it's easy to get a gun in Washington."

Workman also points out, there is no evidence that weapons purchased from gun shows were involved in any of the recent Seattle crimes.

Even so, Fascitelli recommends these solutions: Allow cities to create their own gun legislation which might be tougher than state laws; Make it illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to own a handgun, with a first offense resulting in a mandatory 24 hours in jail; Close the "gun show loophole" that creates a secondary market for weapons; Launch a public health campaign informing people that guns don't make residents safer.

Workman, who is also on the board of directors of the Washington Arms Collectors, thinks it would be "insane" for Seattle or any city to set their own gun laws.

"You can't have Seattle setting itself with gun laws that don't apply anywhere else," he says.

The Second Amendment Foundation said existing laws are enough to encourage gun safety. "Responsible people will maintain gun safety whether there is a law or not. Irresponsible people will ignore the law," says Workman.

Fascitelli is not satisfied with that reasoning, and maintains our state needs gun laws that are more strict.

"We don't have tougher laws because we are spineless in Washington state and we don't have leadership," he says.

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn says he's "made it clear" to the police department that it's their "highest priority to identify the strategies that we need to employ to try to bring an end to this wave of gun violence that the city is seeing."

He also says current laws make it "too easy" for people to acquire guns.

    Guns Are the Problem????
Since when did a gun jump out of the case, load itself, then fire at a person? What a rediculous comment, SPD! Get real. You of ALL people should know guns are no more powerful than the schlep holding it. Remember the old saying, "Guns don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people?" That says it all. Guns are no more than the means to an end, not the end all. Take guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens, you have given them over to the criminals. ACCESS to guns may be PART of the problem, but certainly not the gun. Like the pot calling the kettle black. It's a rediculous statement and really makes no sense. Restrict access by minors, I agree but part of that points right back to parenting. If there IS a loophole @ gun shows, then close it. However, every gun I have bought, I had background and NICS checks done on me, so I don't see how that's a problem. Taking guns away from law abiding citizens is ludicris. This assertion that guns don't make residents safer is also a load of bull. Take away rights to bear arms and compromise safety. Calling 9-1-1 is next to useless because response time is lacking. By the time LEO arrive, the crime's committed and the perp's on the run. I realize it's physically impossible for a unit to respond the moment the line connects but look at it from the resident's pov. How about making PARENTS responsible for their child's upbringing, for starters. Hey, here's a novel idea: TRAIN new gun owners on safety and proper handling of a fire arm. Shooting someone because you don't like what they said, walked on the wrong side of the street, or looked at your sister wrong amounts to GANGS! Beef up the Gang Unit and DOJ needs to back off a bit and let cops do their jobs. Getting a warrant to inspect the contents of a stolen SUV sounds like enough PROBABLE CAUSE for LEO to move in and inspect the "item" found inside. No, SPD, GUNS are not the problem. Gangs, underage possession, irresponsible people in a city policed by a paralyzed PD is the problem. Take guns away from law abiding citizens and you've screwed the pooch. Don't screw over everyone for the misbehavior of a few. Yes, we have a problem but pointing at the wrong thing is NOT going to fix things.

    R U kidding me......
Today's shooter did not appear to be a gang member. The murders in Seattle have not been solved so are we sure they all are gang related? My weapons are not an option to be removed as we have gutted all the state's police departments so I must consider protecting myself and my family. You will not stop the killing by removing legal guns. Find the sources of the illegal guns and tell them about the new laws----it will surely bring about a positive response! (Yes, I did roll my eyes.)

    Gun Shows
If no one has pointed this out, Washington's largest gun club, Washington Arms Collectors, has very strict rules regarding who gets to purchase a firearm at their shows. Members only. Membership requires a background check (CPL, FFL, Law Enforcement ID, Records check), which essentially means that the same rules for buying a gun from a gun shop apply to Washington gun shows. One would be pretty hard pressed to find gun criminals with WAC membership badges. Mr. Fascitelli may the big man on campus with this little press opportunity, but put him on the stage with the likes of Wayne LaPierre or Alan Gottlieb and his tired talking points would be revealed for the inaccuracies that they are in about two minutes.

We don't have tougher laws because we haven't yet succumbed to fascists like Fascitelli.

    You're wrong Sir
As many have eloquently stated here there is no law that will eradicate someone's desire to hate and destroy. Evil people will exist whether you create a law. Take away a gun, they will use a knife or a bat or any other implement of violence. Besides gun control is another feel good measure that in the long run does not work.

Its not the Guns - Its the Anger
Society and government create the situations that lead to violence. Blaming guns is a knee-jerk response. Deal with the real issues - because toomuch anger will find a way if we do not address ROOT CAUSE! Its not the GUNS! Responsible journalism asks questions - it does not just parrot what someone else says.

Worst Gun Laws in the US?
I hardly consider our laws permissive... comparing to Oregon is a weak argument. Now compare to Texas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, .... Gun shows are not the problem either. Washington is not unique in the gun show phenomena. The best first step in solving problems - is to question first your assumptions. Starting with myopia is a bad first step.

We need accountability as well as closing loopholes
How did this mentally ill man get his guns? whoever is responsible, should be prosecuted as an accomplice. Also, we need to look at how we treat, or don't treat our mentally ill in this nation. It is disgusting how we ignore them.
