The worst-dressed Americans live in ...

Layers of clothing, furry boots, and flannel can be found on the worst-dressed Americans who live in Anchorage, Alaska.

Anchorage

Hillary Walker, the assistant manager at lulu e. bebe fashion boutique in Anchorage, says the result of the Travel and Leisure poll naming her city as the "worst dressed" is "a little ridiculous." (AP Photo/Mark Thiessen)

"Travel and Leisure" magazine readers rated major destinations for fashion. Seattle didn't make the worst-dressed list . Are you surprised? Portland and Salt Lake City did.

Of Anchorage, they write: It’s not uncommon to see oversized parkas with fur-lined hoods and bunny boots, and people aren't alarmed when a person wearing a ski mask enters a room. Men sport beards and flannel in the most unironic way possible - to keep frostbite at bay and their appendages attached.

Salt Lake is not considered fashion forward either, making the list at number two. "Perhaps perhaps because, male or female, there are only so many ways to rock a polo shirt."

Portland is number 13 on the list of places where the nation's worst-dressed people live. Their comments about our neighbor to the south: Ah, Portland. Poking fun of the city and its hipster ways has become a national pastime, and it’s not hard to see why. There's the facial hair, of course, and the creative outfits that can make locals look like trendsetters or like they've been playing dress up in their grandparents' musty prom clothes.

can't get too worked up about arbitrary polls. But the empty comment page looked lonely.

Unfortunately we have fashion in the first place,
Clothes are what we feel comfortable in around different climates. As a Minnesotan I really didn't care how I looked as long as it kept me warm in the winter. What used to be for keeping us warm has turned into what can derive the most attention, especially among women, henceforth, the cloths are as tight as can be, they show off as much of the female body permissible but we are not supposed to sexualize them…………I was wondering what women would think if all guys walked around looking like those ballet guys struting around…?

    Peer Pressure...
Peer pressure determines so many people's attitudes toward fashion (and everything else.) Seattle is actually pretty savvy fashion-wise these days, but some people still think "everyone" wears Gore-Tex and blue jeans. Those are usually the suburbanites and -- you know-- people from Duvall, Gig Harbor, Everett, Carnation, etc. Not the fashion capitols of the world! (ha ha)

Come one...the poll was meant to be fun
and yes, having lived in Anchorage for four years...they do dress worse than those in Seattle. Sorry, Seattle, you are no longer the best in the worst dress category.

Why do I get the impression...
That readers of "Travel and Leisure" magazine are a bunch of self absorbed twits?

They obviously missed the recent articles in 'Fisherman's Fashion' -Orange survival suits are so 90's. The Bering Sea screams for yellow chiffon! Or 'Oil Man's Attire', -Silk might be the new denim.

@mnpat... "_what women would think if all guys walked around looking like those ballet guys strutting around…?" -They'd think, that dude is really gay...
