Seattle hits 80 degrees for only 50 minutes

Every night when I talk with my parents in the Midwest I hear about another of dry and miserable conditions with temperatures above 90. That's not our story.

So far this year, Seattle has been over 80 degrees for only 50 minutes. Yes, under an hour.

Local meteorologist Scott Sistek has been looking at the stats from the University of Washington Atmospheric Sciences Department. He says those readings are most accurate because unlike Sea-Tac Airport, the UW keeps an actual minute-by-minute log at their weather station.

The 80 degree mark has been hit only three times this year at the UW. We had 18 minutes on July 8, eight more minutes on July 11, and 24 on July 12. UW has yet to reach 81, and 90 is a distant memory from last summer.

Still, I wouldn't trade this weather for what other parts of the country have had this summer. Would you?

That people keep saying "at least we're not having a heat wave like THEY'RE having in the East, right?"

As if to suggest that we should be grateful and shut up about the poor weather we've had 2 summers straight.

It still doesn't change the fact that the weather has SUCKED here the last 2 summers (and hasn't been that great yet this year).

And no, I'm not going to be "grateful" that we don't have a heat wave like "someone else" is having. It still doesn't change the fact that I live here and for at least a month out of the year I'd love see a little sunshine.

    I'll deal with it...
It was a very pleasant 50 minutes after all... You can always hop over the mountains if you want more sunshine.

I'm more concerned that what's going on in the rest of the country with crops and animals dieing off is going to send food prices through the roof.

    What's wrong with the 70s
I don't see what the problem is with temps in the 70s.

    Great weather that helps
keep more losers from moving here. If I get tired of the grey I can go east or head down to Vegas, LA or Hawaii. Not a big deal.

    OTOH...
Eastern WA is averaging highs of 85-90 for the first 18 days of July. It's fun to rock the Ray-Bans and shorts while soaking up the sun.

    Not me ...
I'll gladly take 85+ degrees. I guess I'm just one of those hot weather geeks. That's why I'll be retiring elsewhere. I've put up with 40+ years of gray misty weather here. Done.
