NJ second-home owners in limbo a year after Sandy
In this photograph taken Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, shows writing on the outside of the vacation home of Cora Hoch in Lavallette, N.J. The home, which was damaged by Superstorm Sandy, has been gutted and no repair has been made to it while neighbor homes are up and running again. Billions of dollars in federal rebuilding and aid and insurance payments have helped many full-time Jersey shore residents to recover. But many property owners of modest means who had scrimped and saved to buy vacation homes on the shore, or may have inherited their getaway bungalows and cottages, have struggled to pull together enough money to hang on and rebuild.
