How to build an earthquake kit

After the 2001 Nisqually earthquake, a 6.8 magnitude quake that was felt in the Seattle area, my husband made sure we could get by for three days in the event of a major disaster.

Most experts say we should all be prepared to get by for 72 hours without any assistance. With that in mind, here are some things we have in the two earthquake supply bags – we keep one in each of our cars:

  • Bottled water
  • Ready to eat food, protein bars and snacks
  • First aid kit
  • Extra clothing and rain gear
  • Hygiene supplies
  • Basic tools
  • Flashlight
  • Battery operated radio, and batteries
  • List of emergency phone numbers
  • Medicine
  • Thermal blankets

These kinds of kits can be purchased. Find links at King County’s 3 Days 3 Ways website.
