Pet tips: Keep your babies cool this summer

Believe it or not, summer is coming! Warmer weather is on the way and we want to help you keep your pets safe as the temperatures soar.
It’s tempting to bring your furry friend along for the ride, but you should never leave your pet in the car unattended in warm weather. Even in the Northwest, the interior of a car can hit 160 degrees in less than five minutes, and parking in the shade with the windows cracked can still be dangerous. You never know what that “quick stop” at the bank or grocery store could lead to, and you don’t want to risk the health of your pet. Enjoy the sunny skies, but leave your best friend at home if you can’t take them in with you at every stop!
If you see a dog in a car on a warm day, you can call your local animal control or fire department. For King County, the number is 206-296-PETS (7387) and for the City of Seattle it’s 206-386-7387. If you’re worried the pet is in immediate danger or they seem distressed, stay with the vehicle until animal control arrives. If you’re near a shopping center, you can ask the store managers to page the owner back to their vehicle. Don’t feel you’re being too nosy – it could save a pet’s life!
