Three high school students are dead after an SUV drove under a parked semi-trailer near Lynnwood.

Late Wednesday, Everett Public Schools released a letter from Jackson High School principal Dave Peters that read, “This morning we learned three of our Jackson High students were involved in a fatal car accident. A Cascade High School student was also in the accident and is in stable condition in the hospital. We are all incredibly shocked and saddened by this event.”

The survivor, a 15-year-old girl, is listed in satisfactory condition at Harborview Medical Center, where she is stable. She was not the driver.

The crash happened around 4 a.m. Wednesday on Alderwood Mall Parkway when Snohomish County investigators say a Kia Sorrento, traveling north, left the lane and slammed into the front of the trailer parked beside the road, alone without a truck.

The SUV went so far beneath the trailer, the top sheared off.

Snohomish County investigators say they don’t know what led to the crash, but, according to spokeswoman Shari Ireton, “that’s the assumption that speed was a factor.”

According to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, it is legal for trucks to park trailers in the designated parking areas along Alderwood Mall Parkway. However, the trailer was not parked in the correct direction, as the front of the trailer was facing the direction of travel by oncoming traffic. That is a civil parking infraction.

According to the letter from the principal, “Our plan at this time is to provide accurate information, opportunities for extra support if needed, and suggest you keep your routines as normal as possible to help students feel secure. We’ve made available counselors, teachers, and other helping resources so students, staff, and parents can get help if they need it. They will be at Jackson High tomorrow, July 27, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.”
