I love good art. My wife and I have some art in our home that moved us to the point where we were willing to spend our hard-earned money to buy it. I love artists who are talented enough to create something that we want to buy.
But you go to this Olympic Sculpture Park on the Seattle waterfront and it’s just nonsense. They’re getting a new feature there, a 46-foot tall face, by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa. It’s a 46 feet tall. It’s a very skinny face. It’s elongated vertically. It is modeled on a young girl that lived near his home in Barcelona.
I still say one of the great scams in the world is public artists who cannot sell their crap to people who would actually have to spend their hard-earned money, so they get these public exhibits to display their work.
If I had some renown as an artist, I could grab this box of Clorox disinfecting wipes next to me, then put a Diet Coke on top of it, and say: “It shows how the balance between Diet Coke which pollutes your body and the Clorox disinfecting wipe that cleanse your soul while they cleanse your workspace.”
If I said that, there would be all these nerds who run these things that would say, that’s so deep, that’s so heavy, and they’d say how much can we give you for that, and I’d say, as much as you can.
So anyway, there’s going to be a giant head down at the Olympic Sculpture Park.
