“Ecca klippa titlinger” is becoming a popular nomination for The Dori Monson Show T-shirt catchphrase. For those not familiar with its origins, Dori laid it out on the show:

Taken from Thursday’s edition of The Dori Monson Show.

Obviously the story was somewhat memorable since so many people associated that with the show. It goes back to when I was about 4 years old and I was with my mom at the grocery store.

My mom grew up in North Dakota in a little farm town. But she didn’t speak any English until she was 5 years old. They spoke only Icelandic in her house. So even though she was born in North Dakota, my mom had a somewhat noticeable Icelandic accent throughout her life.

One day, I’m at the grocery store with mom and I’m sitting in that seat in the front of the cart and there is a woman from Iceland who is visiting Ballard. She had a daughter that was about 14, 15 years old. And my mom sees this woman, they know each other, and they start talking Icelandic.

Then the woman that my mom was talking to, she leans down in my face, and she says in a very thickly accented English, ‘Do you know any Icelandic little boy?’

I only knew one Icelandic phrase at the time. She asked. So I answered. I said, ‘Yeah. Ecca klippa titlinger.’

The woman had sort of a horrified look on her face and her daughter who was also Icelandic, her daughter starts laughing so hard she goes down in the produce aisle. I have no idea why they’re laughing because it was the only Icelandic phrase that I knew. I had no idea what it meant.

The reason I knew this phrase is because whenever I would take a bath it was a big treat in the house to get to air dry. If we were in a bit of a hurry, mom would take the towel and dry me off after bath time. But occasionally, she would let me air dry, which meant I got to run around the house as fast as I can and just let the air dry off my back. And occasionally, when I would do that my mom would kind of follow after me, she’d be using her pointer finger and her middle finger in a scissoring motion saying ‘Ecca klippa titlinger.’ I had no idea what it meant. I just knew it was Icelandic.

I felt really self conscious at the grocery story because the teenage girl was laughing and the mom looked horrified. So I said, “Mom why is everybody laughing? What does ecca klippa titlinger mean?”

Once I learned, I have no idea why my mom would do this. Ecca klippa titlinger translates to I’m going to cut off your…thing. I don’t know why but she’d run after me with the scissor motion with her fingers, I’m going to Lorena Bobbitt you son. I had a very weird childhood. Let’s face it.

That then and now, that remains the only Icelandic phrase that I know.

Would that be a good slogan to represent our show? Submit your slogan ideas here.
