Sandy Hook and Congress

Sandy Hook Elementary was back in session Thursday, seven miles from the original school in Newtown, in a building re-made to look like old one.

"Everything is in order, where it should be," described one of the parents. "The desks are there, even down to the teacher's tic-tacs in the right spot. So they've done a great job."

There will be no special assembly and no one will bring up the massacre unless a child brings it up. The idea is to move on.

The big question now is whether the new Congress, which is also back in session Thursday, will want to bring it up.

The latest polling shows 49 percent of Americans say that it's more important to control gun ownership than to protect the rights of gun owners, and there's that celebrity gun control PSA, featuring Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz and other A-listers.

So the pressure is on. But so far, the only pro-gun members of Congress who appear willing to change their minds and support gun regulation are a handful of pro-gun Democrats.

And that celebrity ad has already turned up on YouTube as a mashup that intercuts those same celebrities with their most violent on-screen gun scenes.

It ends with Conan O'Brien saying, "enough," then a clip of him firing a machine gun on his show.

If you thought what happened at Newtown would make gun regulation a slam dunk: maybe not.

By the way, the new Sandy Hook Elementary is being protected by what reporters describe as a large number of police, just as the NRA has recommended.

    Too many useful idiots in congress on the payroll of the gun manufactures to get anything done.

    Too many useful idiots that think gun ownership makes them safe and there families safe.

    To many useful idiots that think that assault weapons will help them defeat the tyrannical government that is coming after them (unless it is the GOP, they are the good government).

    Let's just strap them up like the old west days and may the stronger man/woman survive and let's police ourself because what the heck, our justice department has become part of the problem with there corruption from the street police to the judges and lawyers, too the highly profitable now privatized jail system.

    Who has the balls to break up that jobs program,lol.

    protection against bad guys (though that is a valid issue) it is about defending against the Tyrannical government you mention. You know the one who will provide "us" with the welfare checks for those we must have by confiscating it from someone else. Oh I must be a useful idiot because I resent the he11 out of being fleeced by all levels of the government each and every day.

    It was a joke....there are already enough gun laws on the books. I'm a card carrying member of the NRA. We do, however, as a nation, need to take a deeper look at helping the Mentally Ill....

    What a travesty. Rebuilding the replacement school to look exactly like the old one is essentially telling these kids, "Oh, look! Nothing really important has changed! Jimmy, and Johnny and Katy and Sue aren't here anymore and will never be coming back...but the teacher's Tic Tacs are in the right place. It must be OK."

    It would be more productive to help these kids understand what happened, to the best of their age-appropriate abilities- than to pretend that nothing happened.

    A month or two down the road they will be just as much a sitting duck as they were before. Pass some gun control, limit the rights of honest American's to protect themselves. Limit their rights to buy whatever gun they want for no other reason than their enjoyment and those kids are still no safer in two years than they are now. Gun free zone sign guarding the front door and an armed officer just one panicked phone call away. Only an idiot would believe gun control laws will protect the unarmed. I mean that in the most condescending way possible.

    But on the train to take away the 1st amendment right. I think they call that hyprocrisy. If you weren't lining up to see hollywood blow everybody's head off, they wouldn't be making these movies. Hollywood reflect the values of there CONSUMERS and so does the NRA & gun manufacturer. Go and see more Disney animations with your kids instead of leaving them at the home to go see some 4'11 actor taking down the world,lol.

    Millions of law abiding Americans who have the right to keep and bear arms are not the ones who are doing all the murdering. Your Anti-American Obamunist regime is trying to make us out to be the evil. At the same time ignoring the real issues simply for political gain. IE REVENGE!.

    Who here is trying to circumvent the first amendment in any way other than you and your Dear Leader? The second amendment protects the first amendment.

    Don't you think DEMANDING someone there first amendment right to publish whatever they want a threat toward that first amendment and how in cow chips does the second amendment protect the first amendment?
