A Clash of Titans

On Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden will meet with an NRA representative, which ought to be a lively session. But will it change anything?

Sarah Brady's been a gun control crusader for 28 years; she thinks that after the Newtown massacre the idea of bringing bring back a ban on military style weapons may have reached critical mass.

"No law is going to be perfect, but if they do help, if they save any lives they're worth it," said Brady.

But the NRA could make the same argument for its idea of putting armed guards in schools - if it saves any lives, it's worth it. A gun is a tool. In the right hands, it's a good thing.

And we're back to the same familiar arguments. Is there anything both sides can agree on? How about this:

A rocket launcher, not just one, but two.

In Los Angeles, two rocket launchers turned up in the city's gun buyback program.

Thankfully, they had no rockets in them. But just the same, we'd probably agree that crosses the line. Or would we?

On Monday, pro-gun talk show host Alex Jones lectured CNN's Piers Morgan on why Americans have every right to own powerful weapons.

"The Second Amendment isn't there for duck hunting, it's there to protect us from tyrannical government and street thugs," Jones told Morgan.

And to protect us from being recolonized by Brits like Piers Morgan.

"Piers," said Jones, "don't try what your ancestors did before."

I didn't realize those were the stakes. If it's a matter of keeping Piers Morgan from taking Boston back, maybe we do need rocket launchers.

    Watch the clip of his interview (2 parts for a total of 14 minutes)with your hero, Alex Jones, and then tell me who's the BIGGER idiot.

    If you don't have the time, let me sum it up for you: Jones is completely unhinged, screaming and ranting the whole time, and goes into wild conspiracy theories. I'm amazed that Piers Morgan managed to keep from laughing at at him.

    What are you talking about. I am using my 2nd amendment right to bear arms against tyranical government. RWNJ are tyranical, they are trying to deport people for having a different view.     To report falsehoods in the news. The Rocket launchers weren't a threat, one was a mock up toy for training and the other was a used empty shell... Bring on some more scare tactics and see if that helps. mass shootings make up a fraction of our preventable deaths in the country. The fact that over 100 thousand people die each year of prescription drugs, our corrupt food system is poisoning our children and our society that is killing us with heart disease and cancer killing MILLIONS of people, and on average around 50 thousand people Die each year from car accidents, thats about 137 people a DAY or 1 death every 13 or so minutes... Yet our whole government spends all its time and money trying to stop something like rifles that make up less than 4% of all gun crime instead of fixing the real issues! THIS MAKES ME FURIOUS! Is Common sense just not in anyone's vocabulary any more???

    Mr Ross, Any credibility you may have had as a journalist is now gone. The two rocket launchers turned in were nothing more than empty disposable containers. No more dangerous than a piece of PVC pipe. In the photos I saw posted, one was an AT4 the other an M72. Both items are what remains after the weapon has been fired. I don’t expect you to be a weapons expert Mr. Ross, but a simple Google search would have yielded the information about these items. Instead, you sensationalize your commentary, leading the reader to believe that shoulder fired rocket launchers are easily available on the streets of the United States. This is simply not true, and you know it. For those who don’t know the truth, but want to both weapons are to be fired once, and once only. When fired all that is left is an empty fiberglass tube that cannot be fired again. They are disposable, and are meant to be dropped in place on the battle field once used.

    He isn't mentally fit to own 1 weapon much less the 50+ he claims to own,I guess he has not figured out that he can't effectively shoot more then 1 at a time if the REDCOATS are coming.This Jones guy seems to be a combination of the LOONs that regularly post on this forum Complete Nut Jobs.     In fiscal constraint, in business creation, in employment. and dont respond with something that shows Texas is not perfect. I am saying they are way better than Cal and cal is such a more beautiful place to live-beach, mountains, mild weather, Redwoods etc

    John Stewart mentioned this group in Idaho on his show last night they are attempting to attract other gun loving "Patriots" to the WAlled City they want to build in Idaho where every (over 18) one needs to be proficient in both rifle and pistol,(and MUST prove it annually) and there is NO LAWS,No taxes,. The house will all be built out of cement with walls around them and include "safe rooms". You are required to have 1 years food in storage.Read about it its very FUNNY.And I think some of our Righty LOONS on this Blog would fit right in
