Uniform expert says Seahawks update will be 'evolution'
In 2012, a 10-year contract between Reebok and the NFL expires. Some think that Nike's takeover means it's a good time for teams to update their look on the field, and the Seahawks are talking about updating their style for 2012.
Paul Lukas runs Uni-Watch.com, the website that's an "obsessive study of athletics aesthetics." He's heard the Seahawks may add feathers to the shoulders, much like University of Oregon's uniforms.
It's likely, says Lukas, that the new look for the Seahawks will be an evolution of style, rather than an a revolution.
But what the change really comes down to is dollars and cents. "If a team looks into changing the uniform, as the Seahawks are now doing," he tells 97.3 KIRO FM's Ross & Burbank, "it's usually because sales are down."
Luke Burbank wanted to check into the possibility of a throw-back uniform making the cut. But Lucas says that because the first question the uniform designers ask is, 'will this sell?' and not, 'does this look good on the field?' teams like the Seahawks will continue to update their style every few years or so.
