Westboro Baptist opts for radio interview over funeral protest

westboroThe tiny, gay-hating Westboro Baptist Church had set its sights on Saturday's funeral for Braden and Charlie Powell, killed by their father in last weekend's horrible tragedy.

The Church has opted not to make a Washington visit, in lieu of a radio interview on the Bobby D Show, where they will get to state their case. The interview has been prerecorded, and will only air if the group keeps their promise to stay away from the funeral on Saturday.

"Fred Phelps Jr. from Westboro Baptist Church did call in," Bobby D wrote in his blog. "He seemed fine to chat with us and let the interview air on Monday. Having said that, if they choose to show up to the event anyway, the interview will be destroyed and will never see the light of day.

Dave Ross said that he didn't understand why the group would target the funeral of two children. "If their theme is 'god hates gays' what in the world are they doing protesting the funeral of the Powell kids?"

"It just sticks in my throat to even talk about these jack holes because it gives them the attention they're looking for," said Luke Burbank.

Pierce County Sgt. Ed Troyer told the Ron and Don Show the best thing anyone can do is ignore any protests that might occur.

"They want you to scream at them because then it gets on TV. It's part of their game," he said.

In fact, if you're angry about a protest, keep it to yourself because Troyer said the last thing law enforcement needs is an anti-protest and then a possible situation that escalates into a fight.

"The last thing we want is any type of fight or outbreak that takes away from what this day is really about."

Rest assured, Troyer said they've had to conceal this group from officer funerals in the past and they're able to make them virtually invisible at the scene.

"If the few do show up, we're covered."

The handful of publicity hungry hate-mongers is purportedly targeting the service because the state recently approved gay marriage legislation. "This is god's revenge on our state," Luke speculates.

The US Supreme Court previously ruled Westboro Baptist could not be prevented from protesting at a military funeral because of constitutional protections.

"These guys are major jerks for doing this, but the question is, if you stop them are you abridging the first amendment that might come back to haunt us later?" asks Luke. "For other people who maybe aren't major jerks but have something they want to say that is politically sensitive or whatever then you abridge their speech as well."

Dave and Luke agree there is a simple solution: Ban protests at funerals.

"You could make this narrowly tailored. In other words, you could it so it doesn't apply to a hundred things, rather just applies to funerals," says Luke.

Dave says you could make the rules very narrow. "There's got to be a body there."

There has got to be something this state can do to shut these fools up. For these brainless, spineless, anti-Christians to be able to spread hate is in, and of itself, against everything our state stands for.

It will be a violent emotional assault if they follow through with it. Actions determine character. How is this action in any way Christ like?

Read James 1:27 with a repentant heart and then ask this again. Christianity is not like consumer culture. It is not based on subjective truth. It is based on objective and unwavering truth contained in your Bible.

They can SAY they are anything they like. Doesn't make it true. This "church" has under 100 members, all related by blood or marriage to Fred Phelps. I have yet to hear of anything they have done that is remotely Christ-like. All I have heard about is picketing and hate. Nice little tax exempt racket they got, though.

We should treat them just like people who go into a pharmacy and change labels on the medicine. They should be treated just like someone who places a bottle of battery acid on a playground with the label "water" on it.

If our ancestors saw us allowing people to attack mourners and use them as a stage for attention? Yeah, they'd roll over in their graves.

I in no way condone these unbiblical hateful blasphemers in their craving of attention and I do not believe a counter-protest will accomplish anything good. Shame on them for desecrating this family's memorial. Be careful however in abridging a person's or groups rights to speak out else I expect open season on the violent activities of the occupests.

Freedom of speech isn't always pretty. That being said, why doesn't anyone start a group that pickets them? One of their kids graduates highschool, picket it. Someone in their family dies, picket, renew their drivers license, picket. Give them a taste of their own medicine.

To test this out, go to a hospital and look for people waiting in the emergency room. Now quickly get your white coat on and dress up like a doctor. Now go into the waiting room and tell people their loved ones have died. There you go, freedom of speech at work, right?

Lying is not freedom of speech. Telling people to go kill other people is not freedom of speech. Blackmail is not freedom of speech. Standing at a funeral protesting is... say it with me... THE ENEMY of free speech.

Couldn't we just have them arrested for disturbing the peace? That way they can't b**** that their 1st amendment rights are being violated.

One of these days, these clowns are going to anger the wrong person or persons, and have a horrific beat down handed to them, by people who don't mind going to jail for a day or two. On that day I will feel no sympathy for them.

Where is the problem on them being there protesting? Just one phone call to the "Toys For Tots" motorcycle brothers to volunteer Security Duty assignments the whiny, religeous worms might stay away from the proceedings. Nothing like a ticked off biker to provide instant intimidation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly, if everybody had the willpower to simply ignore the WBC crazies, there would be little to no social impact due to their rantings. They get tons of free worldwide publicity from the press and the blogosphere that gives them far more credibility than they deserve. Ignore them. Don't give them a stump. Don't respond to their rhetoric. There is no reason to create legislation that impacts everyone, because of the inability to ignore a couple dozen nutbags.

You allow it to grow. The best friend of the wicked are those of good conscious who turn away. Attacking mourners is the definition of putrid. Even dogs know this truth. When you allow mourners to be used and abused, you are an agent of some very vile forces. You might as well be out there holding a sign with them with this kind of attitude.

One soldier's parent having to experience more grief as they place their child in a hole for YOUR and MY freedom is one too many. And their pain mounts for those who either ignore it or endorse it. The pain of that mother is coming to these people. Galatians 6:7

Josh hatcheted his kids, poured gasoline all over the house, ignited the vapors thus killing his INNOCENT kids as well as himself, while destroying another innocent persons property.....

....and this was done because god was angry at the same sex marriage law being passed?

    Now I feel better about understanding why he did this; it wasn't his fault at all. He was just doing the will of the one who sent him. :~{
