Ask Dave and Luke: Are the Pike Place Market bathroom doors too short?

The Seattle Times recently posted a story about a Canadian tourist that wrote a letter to the mayor and Pike Place Market about the poor quality of the bathrooms at Washington's most visited tourist destination. The man reportedly thought the bathroom stall doors were too short and made using the restroom humiliating.

Dave Ross says bathrooms seem to be something no civilization gets right.

"I have commonly left places because I don't want to use the facilities," says Luke Burbank.

He says the city should just add more privacy and says even if the short doors eliminate opportunity for criminals, he's willing to trade off for the added privacy.

"Even if someone was shooting up in the stall next to me, if they had a full door, they could shut it away from me. I would rather have more door in any bathroom situation than less door."

Listener Glenn in Seattle disagrees:

You are wrong on the toilets. The more privacy, the more disgusting people are. I have worked in a public retail store and people throw feces, pee all over, not to mention leaving needles and other paraphernalia around. Short doors are a good thing. Also, women are not cleaner than men, at least in public. Ask any janitor and they will agree, at least ours have. I've heard very disgusting stories.

Luke had suggested women keep things tidier in their restrooms than men.

"Women's bathroom experience is vastly different than guy's bathroom experiences in most public bathrooms. Women keep them cleaner," Luke says.

Listener Terrie in University Place responds:

Women's bathrooms are just as disgusting as men's. Especially in bars or clubs! They're usually filthy, feminine products can be a problem when they're not wrapped, stinky gross. The ladies bathroom at my work (a medical facility) is soooo disgusting, pee all over the seats and number 2 residue Yuck! and reality check...many woman don't wash their hands either ugh!

Ken in Puyallup says he's seen the worst of the worst:

Ex-truckdriver, and I have seen the worst bathrooms on the planet...2nd rule of truckdriving, learn how to flush the toilet with your foot...1st rule of truck driving, have good balance. If you fall, you will want to burn ALL your clothes.
