KCAL-TV reporter Carter Evans caught in gunfire exchange in search for ex-LAPD officer sought in killings

Audio captured by a KCAL-TV reporter following the search for a former LAPD officer sought in the killings of three people stunned live viewers and listeners across the country on Tuesday.

"I've never heard anything like that on the radio in all my years," said KIRO Radio's Dori Monson, who has been on the air in the Seattle area for 20 plus years.

KCAL-TV reporter Carter Evans was live on-air broadcasting from the Angelus Oaks area along Highway 38 reporting he heard gunfire in his vicinity.

Gunfire erupted in what sounded to be very close proximity to Evans. The noise of the gunbattle was broadcast by the station, as Evans suddenly found himself near the fight. Someone could be heard yelling at Evans to get out of the area.

The station rolled live with the coverage as Evans left the speakerphone audio feed open. Loud gunshots could be heard clearly.

"In a time when we expect all of our news coverage to be real time, even by that standard, I've never heard anything like that on the radio," said Monson, after the incident.

Veteran KIRO Radio Reporter Ursula Reutin says she's never heard anything like it either.

"I got to tell you my heart sank," says Reutin.

KCAL-TV reports Evans made it out of the incident OK and is safe.

    More reporters should get out of the SUV's and visit Afghanistan, Mexico, Iraq, and a hundred other places that soldiers and Marines live in. This was not unusual, except for the fact that the deputies seem to be doing all the shooting. Sounded all one-directional, not any return fire from the alleged fugitive.

    you were able to determine where all the gunfire was coming from? I guess those 2 cops must have shot themselves just to make it look like the "alleged fugitive" was firing at them.

    and it was incredibly frightening! Of course there was no way to tell how close it was, or if the reporter who, just moments before had been speaking into his phone, was injured, killed, or in close proximity to the madman Dorner. I hope this nightmare is over for the people of CA...and that no more innocent people were lost.

    That really made my day. Dan, I make up the news, Rather. Cripes! This reporter, by poor his own decisions, found himself in a bad spot, despite local law enforcement being pissed off those poor decision, still reported the news as it was happening while allegedly crapping his pants.

    He actually has a new 60-minutes type show called Dan Rather Reports on HDNet that is pretty entertaining and balanced. A dose of humility corrected his ego.

    I didnt know that KCALS live broadcast was in Stereophonic sound.. So..could you really tell when gunshots were coming from one speaker and then another?? How awesum is that?

    If you’ve ever been in a firefight then you would understand it's not always easy to know where the gun fire comes from...add that you are seeking a hide spot at same time...makes it hard. As far as the reporter goes he must not be one who covers wars much...those can be freighting due to so many different types of weapons being fired and other things dropping in form god knows where. A good combat reporter has heard worse
