Dori thinks the Girl Scout cookie vandalism story is a hoax

A family in charge of their troop's stock of Girl Scout cookies reported that vandals had destroyed over $2500 worth of cookies. People reacted in shock: who would do such a thing to innocent Girl Scouts?

That's why Dori thinks the whole story is a hoax.

"If I'm wrong, I'm a horrible horrible, awful person," said Dori.

Cookie mom Dee Brown said that she was storing her troop's cookies in her family's garage at their home in Monroe. When she looked in on the cookies she saw that they were covered in paint and oil. Some of her husband's tools and her children's toys had also been destroyed.

Authorities said they suspected a group of teenagers had been looking for money. When they didn't find any, they trashed the cookies.

But Dori thinks the story doesn't all add up. He thinks it's the latest hoax designed to get sympathy - and money - from the community, in the form of possible internet charity donations.

"How do we know it was teenagers? Did he see them? Who breaks into a garage looking for money? And how do they know that's what they were looking for," asked Dori. "But if you're going to break in someplace looking for money, nobody keeps money in the garage. And yet, every single story I've seen says three teenagers broke into the garage looking for money."

News anchor Ursula Reutin tried to think like the suspected thieves and suggested the teens may have been looking for the troop's cookie profits.

Still, Dori doesn't buy it. If the suspects didn't find money, why would they trash the cookies? Why wouldn't they steal them for the resale value, or just eat them?

"There's more to this story, and maybe we just don't have all the details," said Ursula. "But there are a lot of holes in this story."

    Good Point
I concur with your thoughts. There is something wrong with this apparent robbery. If you couldn't find any money, at the very least they could have gotten some money with the tools and/or other valuable items that most people store in garages. I'm with Dori, I smell a rat.

    Mistaken
I am the Leader of the GS Troop here in Monroe that was vandalized. Are you an awful person? I doubt that. Uninformed, yes. Had you contacted Mrs Brown you would have learned that she did see the vandals, which is why they ran off before doing more damage. It is also why we know they are teens. It does make sense for them to think she might have large sums of cash in her garage with the cookies. She, fortunately did not. In fact Cookie Managers make regular bank deposits to avoid putting themselves, their troop and their home in a dangerous situation. Our girls don't need sympathy and we don't feed off fear. Our girls are too busy providing service to our community, learning new skills, making lifelong friendships and generally having a great time. Sympathy? We don't have time for sympathy, these girls are too busy out in the world being awesome.

    This is a sad commentary
I am a mom of one of these scouts. While I am proud of our leaders reply to you below, I won't take the high road. Yes, you are an awful horrible person. We are teaching our kids to be supportive and active in our community. We are teaching them to reach out to others around us who need help. Every year they pick charities to support. These have ranged from the food bank to the animal shelter to recycling centers. The idea that when something bad does happen to them, this community that they have worked hard to make better had idiots like you that are negative and post articles that point out the worst assumptions. I would like to point out that we are not asking for any money from the community. We have not set up any funds or asked for additional payments. Dee was very forthcoming in her post and said that girl scouts was covering the cost of the ruined boxes. If the intention had been to scam the community she would have asked for help paying for them. I am sad that you chose the write an entire article with a negative assumption about a group of 6 years olds and the UNPAID volunteers that work hard all year long. You should be ashamed of yourself.

    A couple of things...
    1. Your gut is WRONG! 2. You ARE an awful horrible person! Dee Brown is a well respected leader of not one but TWO Girl Scout troops and the PTA President at her daughter's school. You should be ashamed of yourself!! A full apology is in order here. Do the right thing.

    Get all your facts first
Did you even bother to consider that the money angle was just an assumption as to why those kids were there?? No one knows why they were there besides them. They were probably up for some mischief and that is exactly what they did. Before you spew your personal opinions, try and be a professional and get all the facts. For instance, the family did not contact the media. Someone else did and the media came to them. Yes, they did not refuse it, but they also did not go looking for it. I also personally know this family and many of the girls and their families of this troop and know they are not looking for a handout from anyone. So, before you make a story like this, or any story for that matter, a joke, please make sure you have done your homework.

One of the trademarks of teenage burglars is...
extensive vandalism. For some reason they can't just come in and steal, they have to add insult to injury by damaging everything they can too. Adult or experienced burglars try to get in and get out as quickly as possible. The damage here is indicative of teenagers.

    In Person
Dori, I would like to invite you to our upcoming Girl Scout meeting, so you can tell our twenty 7, 8 and 9 year olds you believe they are liars and vandals to them directly. Then, they can explain to you the Girl Scout Law, educate you on the good they have done in their community, how much work it is to sell their cookies and the sense of pride and accomplishment the get from all of it. A Proud Brownie Leader Erin

    A personal apology is DEMANDED
As already stated in other posts, You ARE wrong, and you are a horrible person. The mother DID SEE the kids leaving the garage, and the motive of money was assumed by the police and the media. But my reason for telling you that you're a horrible person goes beyond the fact that you are WAY OFF, using baseless accusations against honest, hard working caring people, but that you, as a supposed 'responsible' media person have tried to vilify the victim in this story. In my opinion you are a presenting yourself as a shining example of what is wrong with the media. You have planted the seed that these people might not be victims. You might as well be telling a rape victim that it was their fault, or telling me I'm a criminal simply because I own a handgun. You sir ARE indeed wrong and therefore I demand that you not only own up that and print a retraction but that you apologize to these people. This article is not only hurtful but irresponsible and SHAME on you.

    Bad Form Dori
I get that it's easy to be cynical these days but these accusations, made without any evidence, are beyond the pale.

Social Media "Captain" Raftery should keel haul Dori at the first opportunity.
