A KOMO television helicopter crashed Tuesday morning as it was taking off from Fisher Plaza in Seattle.

Here it is just a typical Tuesday, a couple of people were doing a job they've done so many times over the course of their long careers, and then a 38-year-old Richard Newman was just driving on one of the iconic stretches of downtown Seattle right there between the Space Needle and Fisher Plaza.

But this day, news photographer Bill Strothman and pilot Gary Pfitzner both died in that crash, and the 38-year-old man who was driving on the street below was badly burned.

We don't know if Richard Newman was on his way to work in downtown Seattle or what he was doing at 7:30 this morning. But like all of us, he was just living his life and all of a sudden a helicopter comes down on him.

My middle daughter called me as I was driving in to work and asked me if I knew the victims in this helicopter crash personally. I did not know either man. But I've heard beautiful things about both of them from the people over at KOMO who have tearfully been telling us about their colleagues who they all loved very much. But my daughter and I were talking about how this is an example of just how random life is.

You absolutely never know when one of these freak events is going to happen to you. It's one of those stories that just reminds us how random and fragile life is.
