Update: Donations to Cass Reynolds’ iPads for Smiles drives have surpassed $5,100.
Cass Reynolds, age 12, has just had her thirty-third spinal surgery. She has a condition called Conradi-Hünermann syndrome which causes a curvature in the spine, but that’s not what she’s interested in talking about.
Reynolds contacted KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson to talk about a new fundraising project she’s working on to help students in the special ed class she helps out with at her school.
Here’s what she wrote to Dori:
“They are the sweetest kids that you will ever meet. But most of the kids are nonverbal and all we have for them to communicate with us are these little books that the teachers put together. They have pictures taped onto them and the kids have to point to what they want. It takes a lot of time and effort to make these. So I want to raise money for at least 3 new iPad Air 2’s. I am calling it iPads for Smiles.”
Cass has set up a gofundme page for iPads for Smiles. She is trying to raise $2,000 so they can buy all the students iPad Air 2’s with drop-proof cases.
Despite her own challenges, Cass says she’s happy to use her energies to help others.
“I start thinking of other people because I know there are other people out there who have it way worse than I do and have more difficulties and more challenges. At least I can get up and go to school and do all the things that I can do. I know some kids who aren’t able to do that. So I want to give back to those kids instead of saying well I have this going on so I can’t do this.”
