Dori Monson Show listener Derek sent us this message which is a good reminder of why we should stand behind the Seahawks in victory and defeat.

I’d like to share an uplifting personal experience about the Hawks Super Bowl loss.

I grew up in Colorado as a Broncos fan, but after 15 years in Seattle have become a Hawks fan.

The night after the Super Bowl my brother and I started exchanging good-natured competitive texts. He’s still bitter about last year’s Super Bowl loss to the Hawks, and was ribbing me about the pass play call that lost the game in more colorful terms than I can write here.

I would have agreed with him on game day, but found myself defending the Hawks when I pointed out that, unlike the Broncos that had their butt handed to them 43 to 8 last year, the Hawks kept pace with one of the greatest teams in history, and badly bloodied their nose.

As for the controversial pass play call: Even the best of us make bad decisions, but that doesn’t make us any less the best, when we in fact, are. The Hawks are the best. What makes the Hawks so amazing is their willingness to take risks. If they weren’t this way, they’d probably never had gotten this far, and we wouldn’t love them so much. I support their brave choices, both in victory and defeat.

I recently went back and watched Rocky with my kids out of nostalgia, and had forgotten that Rocky lost the big fight. But of course the message of the movie was that he had actually won, because he had proven to himself he had transcended everything by believing in himself, and achieving greatness.

In my mind, the Hawks won the Super Bowl. They out-played the Patriots with heart, and grit that I haven’t seen since I was a teenager playing ball in the playoffs; irrationally passionate like our Hawks now.

Since then I’ve seen pro players clock-in, and clock-out during games over the years, and haven’t really cared. But never, have I seen players play like it matters like these Hawks. They inspire me to do better in my career. When I’ve been down, I see these insane competitors refuse to lose, again and again.

I refuse to lose too, now. Thanks Hawks. Forget the Super Bowl, you are the winners.

Derek
