The Washington State Department of Transportation says they still do not have the promised Bertha update from Seattle Tunnel Partners. A real "shocker," KIRO Radio's Dori Monson says. (WSDOT)

This is a shocker.

We were supposed to get a Bertha update by the end of June. But June has come and gone.

[Update: A WSDOT spokesperson said on Tuesday evening – July 7 – it has received a new schedule from Seattle Tunnel Partners, but needs time for a preliminary review. WSDOT and STP will provide an updated schedule sometime next week.]

I don’t have fond thoughts about Seattle Tunnel Partners, the Bertha project, the years behind schedule, the billions in overruns, the politicians who decided because of graft and corruption to push for this project.

Maybe Seattle Tunnel Partners was hitting golf balls instead of writing the report. Maybe they were out at the pitching and chipping green, and they were honing their short game and weren’t able to finish the report.

How many more lies are we going to put up with? How many catastrophic delays? How many billions of dollars? How many years of time? How many more lies?

Either the people running this project are criminally negligent, or they are unfathomably incompetent. There’s no way responsible, competent project coordinators could have us in the situation we’re in right now.

It is absolutely impossible to be responsible and competent and be in this situation, with the communication as pathetic as it’s been; keeping the public in the dark and missing deadlines.

All the while, the cash register is spinning. The dollars keep piling up every hour, every minute, every second. The longer we’re kept in the dark, the more expenses they can incur. And if they end up &#8212 as I continue to predict &#8212 to pull the plug on this, Seattle Tunnel Partners will still have collected a king’s ransom of taxpayer money for this failed project.
