A”horrific” case of abuse
Can anyone explain to me why these parents are walking around free?
A 14 year old girl in Carnation was found emaciated, dehydrated and suffering from severe malnutrition. Prosecutors Monday filed charges against her 43 year old father – Jon Pomeroy – and her stepmother – Rebecca Long, 44.
When the investigation into the girl’s condition began in August, she was 4-foot-7 and weighed just 48 pounds. I have a 14 year old daughter who is considered tiny at 5-foot-3 and 95 pounds. A 48-pound 14-year-old is unthinkable.
The lead detective on the case said it was the most horrific case of child abuse he’s seen in 16 years on the job. According to the police report, the girl was disciplined by her stepmother by restricting her water intake to the equivilent of half a small Dixie cup per day.
The girl and her 12-year-old brother were forced to sleep on the parent’s bedroom floor and a heavy dresser was pushed in front of the door to prevent the girl from sneaking out in the night to get water. She at times would lick condensation off the window in the bedroom to get some moisture.
One time, when the stepmother believed the girl had drank water out of the toilet, the woman duct taped the girl’s hands behind her back and dunked her head in the toilet as punishment.
She was fed little more than toast. Her teeth were rotted out because her salivary glands had shut down from dehydration. Police believe she was locked in the bedroom during the day.
The 12 year old brother and two family dogs appeared to be well fed and relatively well taken care of. It was only the girl who was targeted for this horrific abuse.
What I cannot fathom is that the parents were arrested Friday – and released on their own recognizance after a court appearance on Saturday. How in God’s name are these two still walking around free? Also disturbing is the punishment they face if convicted. They’ve been charged with first and second degree criminal mistreatment. If found guilty, they face three and four years in prison.
I’ll try to get answers from the King County Sheriff’s Dept on Tuesday as to why the parents were released and how it can be that they are facing such a light punishment.
