The world's most famous wishing well is the Trevi Fountain in Rome. You've seen it on film -- Roman Holiday, La Dolce Vita, Frank Sinatra movie (& song) Three Coins in the Fountain.
So six years ago I'm in Rome with my wife and her family. My mother-in-law tosses a coin into Trevi and wishes for a grandchild. Nine months later: our first, Susanna. Thanks, ancient legend!
Now, though, the fountain is crumbling -- a gargoyle just fell off -- and Roman authorities want to stop the tradition of giving the coins to charity and start using them for fountain maintenance! What if that kills the magic? If this were a Roman myth, Hades would kidnap Susanna and take her to the underworld until I gave him pomegranate seeds ... or something. Anyway, if the euro falls apart, most of those coins will be worthless anyway.
