Kevin Spacey's Day Off

In honor of President's day I'm going to admit that I hate the new Netflix series House of Cards, and it would appear I'm the only one. The critics are raving about it, the Netflix reviews are great and my friends that have watched it are all on board.

If you haven't seen it, Kevin Spacey stars as Francis Underwood, the minority whip in congress who campaigns hard for a Presidential candidate and was promised the position of Secretary of State in return. When the candidate wins he immediately revokes that promise. Honestly I'm surprised if you didn't fall asleep when you read "Francis Underwood."

Also Robin Wright stars as his wife, or maybe it's a cardboard cutout of Robin Wright, I'm not sure. Also Kate Mara is in it, who despite all evidence to the contrary is apparently Rooney Mara's sister. She plays a an ambitious journalist and a terrible person. Pretty much everyone on the show is a terrible person.

To be honest none of that would bother me so much if it weren't for the fact that Spacey is constantly breaking the fourth wall to talk directly to the audience. His character is supposed to be terrifying but it doesn't work when he keeps acting like Ferris Bueller. I keep waiting for him to say that if you stuck a lump of coal in Robin Wright's ass, in 2 weeks you'd have a diamond.

I'm a big Fincher fan but I just can't get into it and I can't find anyone who agrees with me. A lot of people are binge watching it but I wanted to purge after one episode (ZING!). Am I insane? Is there anything that is universally loved that you cannot stand?

I kind of think of it as: American Beauty meets Washington DC. Funny about the "Ferris" reference. I just realized that it was like that. Still I love Kevin Spacey as an actor and this vehicle seems to suit him.... Maybe I'm into trashy tv though... =op

    Netflix
Until my husband finishes Dexter, I don't know from Netflix. Oh, House of Cards is streaming? Never mind. There goes my excuse!

    RE: House of Cards
I really hated the little asides as well, but stuck with it and ended up liking the show, though I can't say the show wouldn't have been better without them... I watched all 13 episodes and was hoping it would build to a big conclusion, but it really didn't. You're sort of left waiting until they make another season for resolution to a lot of the storylines.

It definitely reminds me of American Beauty, which i liked. I initially planned to watch a few more to give it another go but I couldn't do it. I understand that I'm objectively wrong though.

    House of Spacey
The show isn't very good at all. The original BBC version is amazingly good - and yes, it breaks the fourth wall and all that - but it works. This version copies the original, for say the first 15 minutes, then becomes a boring soap - with great production values. And while Spacey is very talented, every time he does a southern accent, you can hear the tapeworms growing larger due to all the extra scenery he's chewed.

    What do I hate?
Well I love House of Cards so I can't commiserate with you there. But I hated The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I know everyone loved the Swedish films, loved the books, then loved the American movie. I started with the Swedish films and that's enough for me. So dark and depressing and I just didn't love that heroine the way everyone did. It just left me cold and wishing I hadn't watched it. So I have no interest in watching the American one or reading the books. Ever.
